10 Ways to Boost Your Immune System

If you’ve been to Kinfolk, then you know that your nerve system communicates with every cell, tissue and organ in your body, including your immune system!   The brain and immune system are joined forces as we continually adapt to new situations and are challenged with new physical, mental, emotional, chemical and spiritual experiences.

The immune system is a complex network of cells and organs that defend the body. The ability of the immune system to recognize and monitor MILLIONS of different substances is yet ANOTHER everyday miracle of biology!

While most people wait for full fledged symptoms to express themselves before pulling out their remedies, we are hoping this will inspire you to live a proactive and preventative lifestyle. After all, the symptoms you may be experiencing are simply your body’s cry for help, communicating with you to make a change or show a little extra love. 

Here is our immune boosting protocol we use the moment we feel the slightest tickle in the back of our throat in no specific order… except #1: Get Adjusted.  That truly is first on our list.

1. G E T   A D J U S T E D

As part of a healthy, proactive lifestyle, we get adjusted weekly, but it is the 1st thing we do when we are feeling under the weather.  Our brain and nerve system communicates, coordinates and controls the function of every cell, tissue and organ in the body.  Organs of immunity such as the thymus gland, spleen and bone marrow are laced with nerve endings. 

As well, the cells of the immune system contain receptors for neurohormones, neurotransmitters and neuropeptides to communicate with the nerve system. 

Getting adjusted helps facilitate and train your nerve system AND immune system to function at a higher level so you can express higher levels of health, healing, energy, vitality and overall quality of life.  So don’t be afraid to book an extra session if you’re not feeling your best, we actually encourage it!

2.  S U N S H I N E   +   V I T    D 3

Optimizing your Vitamin D levels is one of the most important things you can do to achieve optimal living and feeling your best, especially during the winter season when we have the least amount of exposure to sunlight.  Vitamin D is actually a steroid hormone precursor that is so powerful, it influences 10% of all the genes in your body.  That’s nearly 3,000 genes that are impacted by Vitamin D levels.  Nearly every cell in your body has receptors for Vit D, and when Vit D attaches to these receptors they produce antimicrobial proteins.  

Vitamin D via supplements is an option, but the word “supplement” should be taken just as that, a supplement. Think of supplements as insurance... a cushion!  If you can get outside, enjoy 20 minutes of sunshine.  When the sun is first rising in the early morning is the BEST time to find that little sunny spot of solitude.  However, if you’re looking for that little extra we use Vit D 1000 by Seroyal (available for purchase in our studio!) and highly recommend you getting your levels checked to ensure proper dosing.

3. L I P O S O M A L   V I T   C 

In addition to its role as a powerful antioxidant, Vitamin C is a well known immune system promoter. If you aren’t already supplementing with Vitamin C regularly, then there is no better time than the present.  Unlike many animals, humans are unable to synthesize Vitamin C innately, thus we rely on exogenous sources.  When we feel the slightest sniffle, we use this Liposomal Vitamin C (we carry this in our studio shop as well).  It is non-GMO and combined with phospholipids from sunflower where as most products on the market use soy bean.  It also utilizes sodium ascorbate as the form of Vitamin C, which is gentle on the stomach and considered the “alkaline version” of Vitamin C, allowing it to work longer in the body.  

4. B O N E   B R O T H

5. R E S T 

Our bodies have an innate ability to regulate, regenerate and reorganize at a cellular level and much of this restoration is done during a restful night’s sleep.  When you are sleeping you enter delta brain wave state, where the true healing and regeneration transpire mediated by the autonomic nerve system.  In addition, your brain gets flushed of the toxin, beta-amyloid, that builds up during our waking hours.  So don’t fight that extra nap, it’s your body’s way of integrating and healing from the day.

6. M A G N E S I U M

Magnesium is an important mineral that supports over 300 different processes in the body and research estimates that up to 80% of the population is deficient.  It is essential for protein synthesis, cell growth, energy production, nerve function, muscle control and immune function.  Our advice? Don’t come up short on this vital mineral.  At Kinfolk we use this Mag Cal Plus (offered in our studio) or Ease Magnesium Spray, as the skin is a powerful detoxification organ and holds tremendous potential for re-mineralizing the body.  Upon spraying your body, the magnesium is absorbed directly into the bloodstream, completely bypassing the GI tract.  Another option is to use these Magnesium Bath Flakes and float away in the warm bath you so deserve.

7. E S S E N T I A L   O I L S

At Kinfolk, we formulated a Defense blend to serve and support the immune system.  Each oil we chose was for its strong ability to protect you from harmful bacteria and viruses.  It is a combination of wild orange, clove bud, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus, and rosemary.  To use massage into your neck, stomach and / or bottoms of your feet.  Or simply drop into the palm of your hand and inhale deeply several times. 

8. N E T I   P O T

There isn’t much that will give you as much instant sinus relief like a Neti Pot.  It is a small pot with a long spout that you can use to pour a steady stream of water up your nose, directly into your sinuses for a sinus rinse.  We know, it sounds crazy, but trust us when we say it is a total game changer.  In our home, we even use it preventatively whether we are showing signs of congestion or not.  We use a Stainless Steel Neti Pot at home, but also recommend the Ceramic Pots.

This is what we do at home: Distilled water,  1 Saline pouch and  1 - 3 drops Grapefruit Seed Extract .

9. E L D E R B E R R Y   S Y R U P

Elderberries are just another one of the many gifts from nature.  They are kid friendly and packed with immune boosting qualities that are sure to shorten the life of any cold or flu bug.  Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu, of Hadassah-Hebrew University in Israel found that elderberry disarms the enzyme that a virus uses to penetrate healthy cells in the lining of the nose and throat. Taken before infection, it prevents infection. Taken after infection, it prevents the spread of the virus through the respiratory tract. In a clinical trial, 20% of study subjects reported significant improvement within 24 hours, 70% by 48 hours, and 90% claimed complete cure in three days. In contrast, subjects receiving the placebo required 6 days to recover.

10. C O L L O I D A L   S I L V E R

Silver nano particles (AgNPs) are making a comeback in the area of nanotechnology for their ability to fight off even drug resistant bacteria, such as MRSA (source).  AgNPs are attractive in that they are non toxic to the human body in low doses and have a strong antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral potential that can be used to boost your immunity.  Researchers are uncovering many of the mechanisms and suggest that AgNPs attach to the outside of pathogens preventing them from growing and causing an infection (source). 

But, did you know that most sinus infections are actually viral, with only a small percentage developing into a secondary bacterial infection (source)? So, skip the antibiotics and try this colloidal silver neti pot recipe, as it is antiviral AND antibacterial after all.

There are many products on the market claiming to be “colloidal silver” but please do your research!
